Friday evening, February 24th, I checked my email one last time before closing shop for the night. Dragonslayer and I planned to go out and terrorize some high school aged waiter at one of the finer local sushi bars. It was our fifth anniversary and what better way to celebrate than with sashimi and sake bombs? He had to worklate (i.e. shop for gifts at the last minute), so I had some time to check out some superfluous sites just for fun – a rarity for most busy entrepreneurs, especially those in the freelancing world.
And the Oscar Goes to…
The plans to check out the latest cyber-buzz about nothing didn’t last long. Like an envelope at the Oscars, revealing the winner for Best Animated Short or Best something-or-other, the final email I opened revealed that Freelance Writing Dreams had won the award for Best Copywriting Blog at the 2012 World Media Awards. I had to read it several times before it really sunk in.
Not so Fast, Purveyors of Sparkle
I sent a quick note thanking the guy who let us know, and immediately began to text The Prof with the news. The email note instructed us not to publicize the win until they made the award public on the official World Media Awards website. In our own little way, we felt sort of like Matt Damon and Ben Affleck when they swept the Oscars that year with Good Will Hunting. We had to corral our excitement until at least noon the next day, when the announcement would appear live on the awards site.
We dutifully waited the long and agonizing hours. Finally, The Prof sent me news, via text, that the glitter bus had arrived. I dropped my lipstick like it was hot and glided giddily to the office to check it out for myself.
The Prof was way ahead of me.
Acceptance speech in hand, she was already thanking the Academy, her family, the nuns who humored her along though Speech Therapy at St. Louis Catholic School because she couldn’t pronounce her S’s properly. Oh, yes, and of course acknowledging that it was an honor just to be nominated. Twitter was her stage and her fellow tweeps, eventually, had to escort her off when the orchestra had had quite enough.
Flyin’ So High…
…Like a G6
Sure enough, FWD had won the award. The blurb beneath our shiny new designation hailed the Dream Team and our efforts to help other freelancers achieve their dreams. Not only do we provide valuable and relevant content about all things freelance writing and business ownership; we mentor a select few handpicked newbies right into the arms of realizing their freelance dreams. We soared above the stratosphere in excitement as we notified our other team members.
Time for a Thank You to All
First and foremost, we’d like to thank Murray Newlands, Founder of The World Media Awards and the consulting firm, Influence People. He is the reason the awards exist and the conduit by which FWD received such a wonderful and unexpected honor. Says Newlands, “I am thrilled to help shine a spotlight on some of the best blogs from around the world. I think it’s important to hold up examples of bloggers and publishers doing great things.” The Dream Team here at FWD concurs. Acknowledgment from our peers brings a reward all its own and a responsibility that we attempt to earn with each of our posts.
On behalf of Amy Shoultz, Ph.D., Managing Editor and myself, Editor-in-Chief and Owner, I’d also like to thank our Senior Creative Editor, Gib Goff, as well as our two Dream Troopers, Sonja Jobson and Michael Taulier – both staff writers. Without your contributions and promotional efforts, our site would not have the draw that it now enjoys.
Thank you, also, to all of our guest contributors: Erin Feldman, Marjorie Steele, Nellie Sabin, Magda Papas, and anyone I may have overlooked. Your perspectives and personal writing styles add an extra punch to the depth and scope of our offerings.
We’d also like to congratulate all of the other winners–including Alyssa Milano for Best Celebrity Blog, Not Just the Kitchen for Best Lifestyle Blog, and Splice Today for Best Pop Culture Blog. It is an honor to be in such illustrious and talented company. And, wow, it sure feels nice not to affect the feigned applause when the award goes to someone else.
The World Media Awards recognizes successful bloggers and publishers from around the globe. To learn more about the awards and to see all of the 2012 winners, visit The World Media Awards official site here.
Share your glitter with us: After you’ve had an opportunity to visit some of the other sites, come back here and tell us your favorites – besides the sparkly and always-on-the-glittering-edge FWD, of course.
