Search engine optimization (SEO) has always been a moving target with search engine algorithms being modified and refined to keep pace with changes in technology, and one of the most formidable new challenges is using social sharing to promote content. Social media has changed the way we connect and communicate online, and SEO strategy must reflect the skyrocketing growth in social media sharing and collaboration. For freelancers, effective social media management is becoming just as important as compelling content creation when it comes to attracting readers.
A large network of social media contacts can be both a blessing and a burden if you don’t have a good contact management tool. Here are five web-based applications that freelancers can use to merge and manage their SEO, social sharing and writing:
This tool stores contacts and allows you to track communication across emails, Tweets, Facebook messages, blogs and more. You can also sort your contacts into lists and automate the tasks associated with finding and saving contact information. BuzzStream can be used by teams as well as individuals; it’s available on a subscription basis with fees from $20 to $250 per month, depending on features.
Available as a free desktop application or mobile app, Twitter’s TweetDeck lets you watch a real-time stream of social updates from Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Foursquare, MySpace and more. You can collect followers into groups and create separate panes for different streams. Tweet scheduling and publishing and Twitter searches can also be performed directly from TweetDeck.
This social media management tool lets teams and individuals perform useful actions across multiple social channels, including scheduling and publishing updates, monitoring a brand or competitor, discovering and connecting with new contacts, and using Google Analytics tools with an added social layer to measure success. Subscription plans start at $9 per month. A Sprout Social mobile app is also available to manage contacts on the go.
This SEO platform combines SEO management and social media monitoring. A web app crawls sites on a weekly basis, monitoring keyword ranking and checking for performance issues, and a social dashboard lets you monitor interaction on connected Facebook and Twitter accounts. You can also view historic graphs showing daily changes to your friends and followers numbers. The subscription fee for SEOmoz PRO is $99 per month following a 30-day free trial membership.
This is one of the most popular social management apps. The HootSuite Social Media Dashboard allows you to manage multiple social profiles as well as monitor and post to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social platforms. A built-in custom analytics system and the ability to monitor specific keywords help you track your SEO results and brand reach. A free ad-supported version of HootSuite is available with limited features; the Pro version, which supports unlimited social profiles, costs $5.99 per month.
